Charnock Richard Rambling Club

As with many good stories this one started in 1979 on a cold, dark wintry night in a sleepy village where only a few people were out and about and they were all heading for the same place. These were the founding members of Charnock Richard Rambling Club making their way to the old school rooms to discuss the possibility of forming a rambling club for the benefit of the villagers.

Six people turned up to the meeting and the rambling club was born. The first walk was arranged by and for the people in attendance. This was to be a local walk led by Ray Sutcliffe. On the day of the walk heavy snow fell and the wind was icy cold. However, four brave souls turned up and struggled round for several hours and ended up frozen. Following this a further meeting was called and it was decided to carry on and a committee was formed. At this time the committee was nearly the entire membership of the club.

Eventually word spread and people started to attend the walks. The numbers grew steadily and approximately two years later the Club decided to be more adventurous and hired a coach to go to Arnside. This was the start of regular coach trips. Our members now come from Preston, Bolton, Leyland, Coppull and many other towns and villages around the Chorley area. One notable member is Cedric Robinson, the official sand guide who is an honorary life member.

Today we have a thriving successful club. The original walks programme has changed beyond recognition, as originally there was only one walk per trip now there are three. The areas visited have changed as we go further a field to the Lake District, Wales, Yorkshire and numerous other places, although we do occasionally visit the areas the Club made on its maiden coach trips.

The Club now has a Social Committee who plan and arrange long weekends away to walk in areas we would not otherwise visit, and the Committee also arrange social evening events.

In addition, during the summer, the Club has Summer Evening Social Walks arranged on alternate Wednesdays. These walks take place in the local area.

As the Club has been in existence over twenty-five years it is safe to say that we must be doing something right.

We, the members, hope that you enjoy being a member of Charnock Richard Rambling Club for many years to come.
